Nations of Unity, a local Native American organization, presents an evening of extraordinary Native American entertainment featuring Arvel Bird, an international, multi-award winning violinist/flutist/storyteller. Arvel lives in Nashville, Tennessee and he is of the Southern P
aiute
and Métis Nation.
Considered to be one of the hottest Native American artists on tour today, his continuously evolving music is delighting audiences worldwide. His latest album,
Ride Indian Ride, debuted at the Colorado Indian Market in January 2010, is a departure from his more traditional cultural music, with an edgier blues/rock sound that blends his Native American/Celtic roots with a stronger, more soulful sound. The album was inspired by Indian Motorcycles, a symbol of power and magnificence, while honoring the Indian tradition. Songs like “Dark Horse,” “The Chief,” and “Road Master,” all names for Indian Motorcycles, tells the stories of Crazy Horse and add the soulful blues/rock beat that makes the music come alive. He is undoubtedly the best-known Native American violinist touring today. In 1986, he joined Glen Campbell, touring worldwide with Campbell’s band for six years. In 1991, he moved to Nashville and continued touring with Loretta Lynn, Louise Mandrell, Clay Walker, and others. Arvel has shared the stage with other big names in mainstream music such as the Gatlin Brothers, Shenandoah, and Highway 101 and Native American music including R. Carlos Nakai, Bill Miller, Robert Tree Code, Jim Boyd and Micki Free.
Nation of Change resides in the East Tennessee area and is of the Navajo and Cherokee Nations. This dance team will share native culture and tradition by demonstrating unique dance styles that explode with brilliance through their dance moves. They have performed with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra as well as in Europe, Switzerland and the United States.
Also appearing are two high energy drum groups that are not to be missed, Southern Echo from Crossville, Tennessee and Southern Sky from Nashville, Tennessee and Huntsville, Alabama.
